Carling: there’s more flavor to it because there’s more hops in it

No, really. At least according to the advert there is. Carling Red Cap Ale, that is. You remember, it’s light like beer but hearty like ale.

I genuinely can’t imagine a major beer brand today – one big enough to advertise on TV, I mean –  talking about the amount of hops they put in their beer.

As ever, the advert is from the wonderful collection of ads from the Benton & Bowles ad agency stored at Archive.org.

  1. The Guinness Brewhouse Series all had a blurb to say how they differed from ordinary Guinness ('cos you'd never know from tasting them). The one for Toucan Brew was "a great product that has all the characteristics you would expect from Guinness Draught, but the triple hopped brewing technique delivers a smoother, crisp taste that invigorates the palate."

Bollocks, but a reference to hops from a big brand nonetheless.

  2. Wow, Carling used to be advocates of telling their customers about the ingredients used and beer & food matching.

    What happened?
