All I hear is this proud scratched record word "Reinheitsgebot". i actually drink alcohol free Erdinger which is in fact also pretty dull.

Give me a decent pint of British bitter!Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6114284681482585458.post-37962616577433581882012-06-20T21:30:12.086+01:002012-06-20T21:30:12.086+01:00P.s. didn't mean to come off snobbish in my po...P.s. didn't mean to come off snobbish in my post, just trying to make the point that we do have a beer culture here in the states. We certainly don't have the pub culture you see Europe, which in my opinion is far superior than the terrible sports bars I avoid at all costs. And of course the beer being made in Europe is better than many, especially main stream American beers, but I'm glad to be seeing more "beer culture" lately .

Thanks for the article! -masonAnonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6114284681482585458.post-60269480456159640062012-06-20T21:17:49.363+01:002012-06-20T21:17:49.363+01:00I would argue that we certainly do have a beer cul...I would argue that we certainly do have a beer culture in America, although it is a young one. In Austin, Texas where I live no fewer than 10 microbreweries and brew pubs have opened in just the last few years, and many of these are making outstanding beer. These are thriving. There are also many places to enjoy drinking this outstanding beer.

A few years ago I used to love trying different European beers, and still regularly by Belgian beers and some English beers, and occasionally a schneider-weisse(a great German beer), but I have come to realize that the beer being produced within a 30 mile radius of my house is far better, creative, and genuine than the beers coming in from the other side of the world. And now with adelbert's brewery producing excellent Belgian style beer I may not be buying much true Belgian beer in the future either.
If that's not beer culture I don't know what is.

-MasonAnonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6114284681482585458.post-64269578976303040662012-06-19T12:53:40.411+01:002012-06-19T12:53:40.411+01:00Thanks for the link, and the summary. Great piece.

SN Pilsner is brewed at their pilot brewery in Chico, semi-regularly, so you may often find it on tap at restaurant attached to the brewery. It's a great beer, although I'm pretty sure I don't enjoy it as much as the German beers that have been winning awards in the pilsner category at the Beer Star awards in recent year. Schonrämer Pils, for instance, which also won silver in the 2012 World Beer Cup.

There are various factors, only my opinion, that go beyond what is easily measured. Such as lagering temperatures and times, decoction and hop choices (bittering with pellets or flowers vs. extracts, using lower alpha hops with more polyphenols.)

Of course the bigger question isn't who brews the best hell or pils. It is "what other flavors belong in beer?" So I find it interesting that Weyerman is going to start distributing hops from Charles Faram, putting not only hops from England but also those from the US and down under in German hands. And at the same time new hops varieties, that include Cascade as a parent, are being offered to German growers.Stan Hieronymushttp://www.appellationbeer.com/blognoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6114284681482585458.post-89005055240114455892012-06-16T12:29:58.384+01:002012-06-16T12:29:58.384+01:00Erlangernick: Sierra Nevada did win a gold at the ...Erlangernick: Sierra Nevada did win a gold at the World Beer Cup in 2010 with a beer just called Pilsner. Presumably that's the beer in question.

Yes, if they’d recorded the attenuation of the beers too it would have been better, but that's a minor quibble.Barmhttp://refreshingbeer.blogspot.comnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6114284681482585458.post-77015867583315221082012-06-16T11:59:24.978+01:002012-06-16T11:59:24.978+01:00Eine ausgezeichnete Zusammenfassung -- vielen Dank...Eine ausgezeichnete Zusammenfassung -- vielen Dank! The only quibble I have with the show is with the lab analysis. Original gravity is suggested to mean "maltiness", which it isn't necessarily. The real problem with the lack of character in those Pilseners is not their "within-style-guidelines" ~1.045 OG, but how miserably bland they must be filtered down to lose all the maltiness that they COULD have even with a bit less malt than the SN Pils with its ~1.049 OG.

I want to know what SN beer this is -- the Summerfest? It's struck me as a lovely Hell, but I didn't know it was supposed to be a Pils. Or maybe it's been changed in the last several years.

Another interesting bit was the blind taste guessing of Josef Sixpack; how few of them could correctly identify even a couple of the different beers. Would've been really interesting to have included the SN in that.

Spread the news about this one.

Those who want to watch a larger format of the video with German subtitles can do so through ZDF's other Mediathek library
< http://www.zdf.de/ZDFmediathek#/beitrag/video/1656374/ZDFzoom:-Hopfen-und-Malz-verloren! >
and click on the hearing impaired symbol to the right of the time counter. If anyone knows how I can capture those subtitles to a .txt or .srt file, please, I'd like to know about it! That video is also downloadable, but through a rather cumbersome process involving the VLC media player. Anyone interested in how to do it can tweet me privately.Erlangernickhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09564871714656285737noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6114284681482585458.post-90751045943426764792012-06-16T08:05:14.879+01:002012-06-16T08:05:14.879+01:00Brilliant Rob.
